Evaluation of Driving-assistance Systems

چکیده
This paper describes an experimental study concerning an evaluation of advanced driving-assistance systems using methods for estimating workload levels. The effects of such systems on drivers’ mental workload and driving performance were measured experimentally using the driving simulator. Six subjects were instructed to drive the simulator in a highway environment with and without Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and/or the collision-warning system (CWS). To assess the effectiveness of these systems on drivers’ performance, the subjects were asked to calculate sums of singleor double-digit figures displayed. The results show that higher accuracy was obtained under a condition with ACC than without it. To estimate the subjects’ mental workload levels, their electrocardiograms and respiration data were recorded during the sessions and the RRI, heart rate variance and respiration frequency were calculated. The results indicate that the provision of the CWS and ACC reduced the subjects’ mental workload compared with the situation without the systems.

In this paper, two newly developed driver models are presented. They are applied to the evaluation of two driver assistance systems. First, a longitudinal driver model is developed based on measured driving data, which is subsequently used to evaluate the impact of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) vehicles on traffic flow. A lateral driver model based on the model predictive control principle is t...

We propose an evaluation methodology to analyze the safety level of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as a human–machine systems in terms of comparing the increase in the safety level during normal system operation and the decrease in the safety level during a system malfunction. We propose a concept of combined error for the human– machine system and quantify this combined error by dri...

In order to efficiently assist the driver, assistance systems need to be able to tune the offered assistance to the driver’s needs. As the number and variety of assistance systems in the automobile increase, we are increasingly supplied with data from various sensors about the state of the vehicle, the driver and the driving environment. A fusion of the available data can provide the systems wi...
